We work with children between the ages of 2-15 years old.
Child-Centred Play Therapy, or CCPT, is a non-directive, evidence-based approach to child therapy. It recognises that on a brain-based level, children lack the developmental capacity that adults may have to "talk through" their feelings, and instead communicate and integrate their emotional experiences through play. A play therapist is trained to be fully in-tuned to what the child is trying to communicate, and can help them to manage difficult experiences or difficult emotions by assisting them in processing their experiences. It has been proven through Meta-Analysis that Child-Centred Play Therapy is the most effective therapeutic approach for this developmental age group.
We recognise that part of your child's journey and progress will be amplified by sharing ideas and techniques with parents so that they can integrate helpful approaches at home. It is also important that parents feel supported throughout this process, and we have routines in place to ensure that parents remain informed and support throughout their child's therapeutic process. We recognise that it can be difficult not knowing what is happening in the therapy room each week, and endeavor to ensure that you remain comfortable and informed about what is happening.
Ongoing support can be offered to parents who are managing things such as processing a new diagnosis.
Synergetic Play Therapy, or SPT, is an approach used to supplement CCPT. Through an SPT-lens, we are able to focus on the body's nervous system and the brain, in order to recognise what is happening for your child, and assist them in forming more adaptive and helpful links in their brains. SPT allows us to remain in-tune with your child's nervous system, so that we can connect them to their body, help them to recognise their emotional responses, and assist them in finding ways to regulate their emotions. SPT endeavors to normalise your child's emotional experience, and to help your child to feel in control of their body, and in-tune with their emotional responses.
Sometimes we feel that it is important to adopt an integrated approach to your child's therapy, based on their needs, their developmental age, and your collective goals for therapy. This might look more like talk-therapy, Learn to Play (teaching children play skills), or even involve your presence in the room. Our aim is to assess a child's needs when they come to us, and determine which approach will be best-suited for you and your child. Often therapy can evolve based on your child's progress, and based on their current support needs. Our aim is to offer a fully-rounded approach to treatment.
Our therapist is DBT and CBT-informed, and has experience in psychotherapy and talk-based approaches for children with an ASD diagnosis.
If you are NDIS-funded, we are well-trained in writing thorough reports to assist you with funding or upcoming plan meetings. In addition, if you are awaiting diagnosis or are uncertain about whether a diagnosis is needed, we can offer advice and assist in referring onwards. We are able to support self-managed and plan-managed NDIS clients.
At Orchid Child Play Therapy, we are extremely passionate about supporting the growing Autistic community, and make an effort to remain informed about all ongoing developments in this industry. We listen to Autistic voices in the community, so that we can best understand how to assist your child with their needs.
